Successful Social Media campaignes

The campaign commercial, in which the “Old Spice guy” aka actor Isaiah Mustafa who is a well known social media campaigner, he starred in most of all the Old Spice’s recent commercials.  He has come to be known on the Internet and T.V. but that ended today. In his tweet on tweeter, Mustafa says, “like all great things this too must end”, then he catches a giant fish which falls from nowhere.  It had me rolling in laughter because of his since of humor.  The team behind this well-ran campaign managed to engage half of the Internet, and promote almost untouchable results from social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter.  Even the comments on Youtube were overwhelmingly positive and that usually never happens on that website.  The Old Spice Twitter account accumulated tens of thousands of new followers and the YouTube video’s sky rocked into the hundreds of thousands of views.
The Old Spice guy recorded his video responses in rapid succession which were a huge hit and an amazing feat in itself that cannot be truly appreciated if you’ve never been in front of a camera. His answers were a key mix of coolness and the stuff Internet sites are made of.  The actual brand of Old Spice was never made to force viewers to buy the product but it sure helped when he came on with his positive attitude and hilarious jokes to help promote the Old Spice brand.  Most importantly, all the commercials are incredibly fun to watch and suggest everyone take the time to watch at least one.  This campaign team went to great links to engage celebrities, influencers, common folk and popular social media sites in balanced quantities to help make Old Spice one of the most popular used products on today’s market.  With these commercials and social marketing campaigns it knows exactly how to talk to them.  Just from myself watching the commercials made me go out and buy the Old Spice Swagger body wash and try it.  Ever since then I have bought Swagger body wash every time I go to Walmart or any other store that carries Old Spice and I haven’t looked back!

  1. Jr! We both picked the same commercial!! I comepletely agree, this campaign is a really well-known success. The Old spice guy is talking TO consumers and not AT them. That is really important as markting moves more into that form of communication. I am alway ammused at these series of commercials. They are fun and creative and have gone extremely viral! I dont know that I would sit down with a guy and have a "talk" about what body wash to use, but obviously the commericals make you want to by the body wash

  2. When I was looking for a successful campaign to blog about this commercial appeared on numerous sites as being a success story. I think that everyone knows about these commercials and have discussed them with friends. But I wonder how successful they were in actually getting people to go out and purchase the products. But I can only assume that if you, JR went out and purchased the body wash because of the commercials that others must have done the same. I would agree though that these commericals were entertaining if nothing else!

  3. "The Old Spice" commercials are probably my favorite along with my mothers. When the commercials first aired my mom quoted them all the time. She even went out and bought Old Spice products for my step dad because she liked the commercials so much. I definitely agree that these commercials are a great marketing campaign but until I read your blog post I didn't know the effect they had on social media marketing. Overall I definitely think Old Spice has done a great job and actor Isaiah Mustafa was definitely a major contribution to the success. Great Post!

  4. Great post about the Old Spice Commercials and it's effectiveness on promoting their product. The fact that their latest commercial received 2.4 million hits on Youtube.com explains just how social media can impact the branding and promotion of their product.
